Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water is a company that was started in 2012 by Ryan Emmons only in his early twenties. Since that time, the company has enjoyed phenomenal growth, from 2304 cases sold the first year to over 120,000 cases sold annually. With a record growth of over 4000% and receiving numerous awards and accolades, the business world is taking notice.
Although Emmons grew up in California, he spent much of his time in Hawaii, learning its culture and how the people respected the land and wanted to take care of it. Emmons did not forget what he saw and what he learned in the islands.
While attending the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California where the received a BS degree in Business Administration, Emmons researched the feasibility of starting a water bottling company which would eventually be Waiakea. However, this was not just ordinary water found in most bottles sold in the United States. This water was different. The water Emmons uses is found only at the base of Mauna Loa, a mountain located on the Big Island of Hawaii. The water is naturally alkaline (8.8pH) coming from snowmelt and rainwater draining down the 14,000-foot volcano, picking up electrolytes and minerals along the way. It is some of the purest water in the world.
According to Organic Authority, Waiakea water is certainly a business success, but Emmons does not stop there. Wanting to produce an environmentally safe product, he uses bottles that are 100% RPET with a 90% smaller CO2 footprint. Waiakea water is the only company in the U.S. that is certified CarbonNeutral®.
However, Emmons is not satisfied with producing a great product that is environmentally friendly, he gives back. He supports numerous local organizations and nonprofits in Hawaii and extends his philanthropic activities to the African nation of Malawi. He has given over one billion liters of clean water to the people of Malawi and has sponsored several Elephant Pumps, which is an ancient water pump that does not use electricity.
Under his leadership, Waiakea water is showing other business and business owners how a company can be profitable, but also environmentally friendly and focused on helping others as well.
