Dick DeVos Jr. is a highly successful businessman from the state of Michigan. He is the son of Amway co-founder Richard DeVos. DeVos worked as CEO of Amway from 1993 to 2002. He is also the husband of Betsy DeVos, who is the 11th and current Secretary of Education of the US. Apart from business, the couple has been active on the philanthropic side of things as well.
Way back in 1989 they started the Dick DeVos and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation which focuses on education. Through this foundation, they have donated millions of dollars to different organizations such as Mars Hill Bible Church, Kids Hope USA, Helen DeVos Children’s hospital, Michigan Aviation Academy and Grove City College to name a few.
Mr.Devos is also active in The Windquest Group, an investment firm based in Michigan that is involved in the clean-tech industry, manufacturing, the service industry and non-profit organizations. In his early years, before he became the CEO of Amway, he worked for the company at different levels. He joined the company in 1974 and started working in different operating departments at Amway. His first big break at the company came in 1984 when he was promoted to oversee the companies operations in 18 different countries.
After leaving Amway in 1989 he started the Windquest Group. However, his father had other plans for him and appointed him as the manager of the Orlando Magic Basketball team, which the family had bought. It was during his tenure at the basketball team, his father made him president of Amway in 1993. Under his guidance, the company grew even bigger and made its presence felt in nearly 50 countries across six continents. As CEO of Amway, he was responsible for the successful restructuring of Amway and established an umbrella firm which was named the Alticor Corporation. This corporation included Quixtar, Amway, and Access business group.
He and his wife Betsy DeVos have four children. Betsy comes from a prominent business family as well. Her father is Edgar Prince, the founder of the Prince Corporation located in Holland, Michigan. Betsy has been known as a champion of good education for children of the US, even before she became Secretary of Education.
