The Brazilian legal system is one of the trickiest to navigate. For this reason, becoming a lawyer is relatively popular in Brazil. The SEC WhistleBlower program began its role in 2010 under the Dodd-Frank Act. The Dodd-Frank Act was an enactment of the reforms of the Wall Street and Consumer Protection Act to recover from the Great Depression.
The SEC provides avenues for employees to report violations to work with protection from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The program pays the whistleblower 10%-30% of the total amount from the enforcement actions on the act if the value reaches $1 million. On exceeding the $1 million mark, the individual has added another value from the computation of values derived as a result of reports from other organizations and legal unions.
By June of 2016, the total leverage awarded to whistleblowers was estimated to be $17 million.
The award was the 6th to be computed since the beginning of the SEC operation.
The program protects the whistleblower from retaliations by employers at work with the representation of a whistleblower lawyer.
The Labaton Sucharow legal enforcement firm, led by Jordan A. Thomas, was the first company in the nation to practice protection of the SEC whistleblowers. The company, which began operations 5o years ago, the firm provides expert researchers, forensic accountants and financial data analysts who have experience in the general and legal field.
Jordan A. Thomas was a former leader at SEC overseeing the creation and implementation of the Whistleblower program by drafting, proposing and executing the necessary plans.
To further protect the whistleblower, the individual is neither required to provide their personal information nor that of the alleged violators. Whistleblowers facing a language barrier concern can access free translation services upon request.
A former Labaton Sucharow client provided vital information to sue a violator in the financial markets. The SEC maintained its work ethic of protecting their client’s privacy.
Jordan stated that his client was courageous to blow the whistle and solve the accumulating problems encountered by investors due to the violation. He predicted that future enforcement acts would be results of such brave employee actions. The future enforcement against alleged lawbreakers the finance industry will have a similarly powerful effect on businesses.
Jordan also followed the SEC regulations by charging an employer for retaliating against a whistleblower. He has also received an award in the representation of a whistleblower.
To ensure that the awards are consistently available, the Congress founded the Investor Protection Fund to replenish the amounts. The present balance in the Fund’s account is estimated to be $400 million.
Brazilian law has been described as a hybrid system. Its origin is derived from the Portuguese Law, as Brazil was a Portuguese colony. Brazil attained the ability to create its independent legal system after achieving independence in 1822. This triggered the emergence of independent legal institutions and legal practitioners.
Some of the first law schools in Brazilian history were founded in 1827 in various areas such as Olinda as well as Sao Paulo city. The existence of multiple traces of the Portuguese law has not been an impediment to other influences from foreign laws in the Brazilian legal framework. The Brazilian Civil Code serves as one of the indicators of external influences from the French and Germans. Currently, the Civil Code boasts of significant influences from the Italian Civil Code. The existence of such foreign influences depicts the extent of how the Brazilian legal system is hybrid in nature.

The cold season of winter is a time when animals are left out in the cold weather with no place to shelter. It is on this basis that the long time New York City lawyer Ross Martin Abelow started a campaign that was launched at the beginning of the year on 13th January 2016 to raise $5000 to be donated to shelters so that it could take care of the animals in the streets.
The existing shelters at the moment do not have adequate capacity to take in more animals because of the logistics involved. The donations will take care of food, medical care and blankets for the helpless and vulnerable animals that the shelters will take in to their care. The goal and aim of this campaign is to raise awareness and look for support from animal and pet lovers so that the animals in the streets do not suffer from the winter which suffering may result to death.
Ross Abelow is a long-time resident of New York. He was selected to spearhead the campaign as part of his community work which he has passion for. Abelow attended Brooklyn law school and later graduated in the year 1989 after he attained his law degree. He also did his undergrad at the State University of New York. Abelow focuses his carrier on family matters with his specialization on matrimonial and family law plus entertainment and commercial litigation. He became licensed in 1990 to practice law. Abelow is a partner at the law firm of Abelow & Cassandro, Llp. He brings a vast wealth of experience to the legal profession.
Thus the campaign was started with the aim of raising money for animal shelters in the New York City to take in more animals on the streets. This will ensure that shelters will have adequate cash they require to take care of the homeless animals. Through the campaign the amount raised will be channeled to financing the running of those shelters which including buying of foodstuff, blankets and vaccines.
This is a noble idea that seeks to reduce the deaths of animals and pets in New York City since most of the shelters do not have more spaces and capacity to take in more animals due to financial constraints. Thus the campaign by Abelow seeks to fund and empower shelters to take care of the suffering animals in the streets through provision of food, blankets and Medicare.
