Thor Halvorssen is a human rights activist and an advocate. He was born in Venezuela. He founded the Oslo Freedom Forum which has been praised for its efforts towards human rights. Halvorssen also founded the Human Rights Foundation in 2005. The headquarters of the foundation is in New York City. Its international council includes Harry Wu, Mart Laar, Ellie Wiesel, chess Grandmaster, and Garry Kasparov. Thor Halvorssen has advocated for the release of Liu Xiaobo who is a political prisoner in China. Halvorssen has been a harsh critic of various dictatorship regimes around the world. He has conducted advocacy campaigns against Uganda’s YoweriMuseveni, Panama’s Ricardo Martinelli, and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez.

Halvorssen is also a film producer, and he has been involved in the production of several films over the years.
